What training is there for P.A.s?

Currently there is no formal qualification available targeted specifically for P.A.s. However work is going on to identify the training needs of P.A.s and to explore possibilities of developing appropriate qualifications in the future. Members of the PANet will be offered the opportunity to contribute to this development work. (To register for free membership to PANet click here.)

This is not to say that no training is available for P.A.s. Your local Council may let you take part in existing training offered to their employees in the social care sector. Your local Council may offer training on some areas such as 'Moving and Handling' 'Basic Food Hygiene' or 'First Aid' or will be able to tell you where this training is available locally. To find your local Council click here.

We are currently develping a database of training providers who deliver training specifically for PAs or their employers through recommendation given by the people who attended the Picking your Pathways consultations.

If you have recieved or know of good training providers delivering training relevant for PAs or PA employers please sned the contacts to panet@arcuk.org.uk and we can include themn our database.

Your employer will help you to decide what training you need to support them but you may also want to take additional training that you may feel will be helpful in future or is of particular interest to you.

If you are employed to support someone who cannot easily explain what they want you to do for example a person with dementia or a person with learning difficulties and high support needs, you may find it helpful to use the 'Basic Personal Care MOT' booklet produced by Nottinghamshire County Learning Disability Partnership Board and Nottinghamshire NHS. You can see or download this from the Nottinghamshire County Council's website or you can ring 0115 8542263 for a paper copy.
