What are Individual Budgets? Confused lady in blue

Individual Budgets are money given to those who are eligible to pay for their care needs,

Offering people Individual Budgets to pay for the support they need is being trialled in some areas and if successful will become available in other areas.

Adults (aged 18 and above) with a physical or a learning disability

People with mental health support needs

Who pays the Individual Budgets?


The money is provided by the Departcheque and handment of Health, Department for Work and Pensions and Communities and local Government.

The Individual Budgets payments can be made up of lots of different funds. For instance it could be made up from Independent Living Fund money, Integrated Community Equipment Services, Direct Payments money, Disabled Facilities grant money, Supporting People for housing-related support and Access to Work money. Both Direct Payments and Individual Budgets are provided to enable those who need support to choose the way in which they receive that support, giving more independence and freedom of choice.

Direct Payments is money, given to those who are eligible, to enable them to be responsible for providing their own social care needs as assessed by their local Council instead of having services provided for them.
